How to avoid ridges from forming in the surface?
Microcement is intended to be applied in very thin coats. Each coat should be no thicker than the grain in the product.
The best way to apply the microcement is to put an area down using random movements. Then go back over the area, removing any excess product & blending it into the previous section.
Apply just enough pressure to the trowel to avoid any excess product sitting on the surface.
If you follow this principle, you will remove any ridges in the surface whilst it is still wet.
The correct technique for applying microcement is covered in more detail here:
Correct Technique for Applying Microcement
Removing ridges from cured microcement
If you have already applied some, or all, of the microcement base coats, then you will need to sand the surface thoroughly, to smooth it, before adding another coat.
If the ridges are in the base coat, use a 40 or 80 grit silicone carbide sanding disc to sand the surface until it is completely flat.
If the ridges are in the top coat, then try a 220 or 120 silicone carbide sanding disc instead.
Microcement does go hard very quickly, so you may need to move to a lower grit, if the one you are using isn’t cutting through the surface.
Apply another coat of microcement
Once the ridges have been removed and the surface is flat. You can continue to apply the microcement.
If you have already completed all the coats, you may need to add a 3rd top coat to get the surface looking smooth & even.
