Recoating Microcement Surfaces

Whether you’re looking for a colour change, a freshen up, or you’re not happy with how your microcement is looking, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about recoating your microcement surface, both before and after sealers have been applied.

Recoating Microcement Surfaces Before Sealers

It’s a lot easier to make changes to the microcement before sealers have been applied.  So, take your time to check that you are happy with the surface before sealing it.

If you’re unsure about the colours or the appearance of the microcement surface at all, then it’s best to recoat it before applying the sealers. As long as the sealer hasn’t been applied, you can go directly onto the surface with another top coat.

Give the surface a good sand to give it a key & flatten any ridges or thicker areas.  You want to try and get a completely flat surface, so take time to remove any ridges or cracks.  And try to get right into the corners to remove any product that has built up there.

Now apply another top coat. It’s best to go quite tight with the final coat, put an area down, then trowel back over it, removing any excess product and blending it in with the previous section.  See the installation guides for more information on applying the final top coat.

The microcement is opaque so if you have chosen a different colour, you shouldn’t see any of the previous colour coming through, unless there is a significant difference between the 2 shades, in which case you might need a second coat.

Once the top coats have dried, you can give the whole area a good sand & seal according to the installation guide for your chosen sealer.

Recoating Microcement Surfaces After Sealers

Once the sealer has been applied, the recoating process is slightly more involved.

You’ll need to start by giving the surface a good sand to give it a key & flatten any ridges or thicker areas.

Once the area is clean and dry, apply a coat of Primer 100, followed by 2 additional top coats and then sealers.  See the relevant product installation guides for full application instructions for each product.

You’ll probably notice that the first coat of microcement appears grainy and may drag, this is why we recommend a second top coat, which should go on a lot more smoothly.
