Choosing the Right Sanding Discs for Microcement
When working with Microcement, it’s important that you use the correct sanding discs. We recommend Silicone Carbide Sanding Discs, which are specifically designed for use with cement-based products.
Silicone Carbide Sanding Discs are recommended because they are strong enough to cut through the cement without being worn down too quickly themselves.
Aluminium Oxide Sanding Discs, which are commonly used in woodwork, aren’t strong enough for use with cement, so they will most likely wear down quickly & may also transfer their colour to the surface of the microcement.
Always use the correct grit for each stage of the system and avoid excessive pressure, allowing the abrasive to do the work.
For top coats we recommend 120-220 grit sanding discs, start with a 220 grit & move down to a 120 grit if it is wearing down quickly or not impacting the surface.
For base coats we recommend 40-80 grit sanding discs, again start with the higher grit and work down if needed. This will help you to avoid accidentally removing too much product.
Which Sander should I Choose?
For best results, we recommend an orbital sander with extractor, some popular brands include Mirka & Festool.
