Blocking Persistent Stains During Application

This guide explains how to resolve persistant stains in the substrate or base coats from ghosting through to the final finish.

What Causes Persistent Stains?

We always recommend that surfaces are clean & dry before microcement is applied. This can sometimes be difficult to achieve, particularly on older floors, where unknown spills have become ingrained in the surface.  Or where a lot of spills have occurred previously on site.

Use High Performance Primer

If you can see that the floor is stained before you start, or you have suspicions that oil-based products may have been spilled on the surfaces in the past, it’s best to use high performance primer.

High performance primer is an epoxy primer that is trowelled over the mesh & scattered with sand to create a strong solid base for your microcement.  It also does a good job of block stains from transferring through to the microcement from the surface.

How Can I Block Stains After Applying Microcement Base Coats?

If you are installing microcement over and notice that stains in the substrate have penetrated through to the surface after the 1st or 2nd base coat.

At this stage, the only way to stop it coming through to the surface is to use a vapour barrier like Impripox, followed by another coat of primer 100.

ImpriPox is a 2-part epoxy primer that will block stains from transferring through to subsequent coats.  Primer 100 will ensure good adhesion.
