Because microcement is finished with a protective sealer, applying new layers onto it, such as paint, tile adhesive, or alternative coatings requires specific preparation. This guide explains how to identify your current finish and the steps needed to ensure your new building materials bond perfectly.
Can I Apply New Products Over Existing Microcement?
If your microcement installation is complete, the surface will have a polyurethane sealer protecting it. Before applying any new coatings, follow these troubleshooting steps to ensure good adhesion with the surface:
Check with the Manufacturer
Contact the manufacturer of the product that you intend to apply on top of the microcement to ask if their product can be applied to a polyurethane surface.
Ask the manufacturer if a specific adhesion primer is required. Using the correct primer will help to ensure good adhesion between the 2 surfaces.
Sanding & Removal
If the new product isn’t compatible with polyurethane, you must use an abrasive sander to completely remove the polyurethane sealer. Once the sealer has been removed, you will reach the raw, cement-based surface.
You will also need to confirm with your manufacturer if their product is suitable for application directly onto cement-based surfaces.
Paint Considerations
Generally vinyl-based paints can be applied over polyurethane, but again, check with the manufacturer of the paint that you intend to use to be sure that it is compatible with polyurethane.
