Applying Microcement Alongside a Shower Tray or Flooring

Trying to figure out whether to fit your flooring or shower tray before or after the microcement?  We’re here to help!

The guide below explains the process for each option so that you can decide which is right for you. This guide is focused on shower trays and flooring but the same principles apply for any adjacent surface that will meet the microcement.

There are a couple of ways to approach laying alternative flooring or shower trays up to microcement walls.

Before the Shower Tray/Floor is Installed

Before starting the microcement application, ensure that both the walls and floor are well consolidated, movement has been eliminated and there are no voids in the substrate.

You can then apply the full microcement system as directed in the online training.

When you come to the join between the wall & floor (or other adjacent surface), run your finger, or a corner trowel along internal corners to push the microcement into the corner and then gently trowel away the excess product in both directions.  So that you have around 100mm lip of microcement on the floor.

Once the microcement application is complete, you can install the tray or flooring up to the wall & apply a bead of silicone along the join where the 2 surfaces meet.

This is our preferred method because it reduces reliance on the silicone join.

After the Shower Tray/Floor is Installed

If the shower tray or flooring is already installed, then you will need to cover the tray, using a suitable tape to protect the surface, with gaffa tape on top.  Once the microcement installation is complete. Remove the tape & apply a bead of silicone along the join between the 2 surfaces.
