Applying Microne Plus Medium & Fine for Two Tone Effect

Follow the directions below to apply a coat of Microne Plus Medium top coat, followed by a coat of Microne Plus Fine to get a two tone effect.

The installation guide includes a video demonstration of how to apply the two coats efficiently and effectively, plus detailed written instructions.

See Technical Info for the key technical facts.

Mixing Microne Plus Medium

The microcement is pre-mixed and the colour has been added to the tub, so all you need to do is give it a good mix to ensure the colour is evenly distributed. Then add 500g Microne Plus to 10kg Tub of Microne & mix well with a microcement mixer. That’s a mix ratio of 1:20.

Once the Microne Plus has been added to the tub, you’ll have around 2 hours working time, so only mix it when you’re ready to use it.  And mix in batches if you have a large area.

Let the mixture rest for a few minutes before applying.

Apply 1st Coat Microne Plus Medium

Use the same technique as you did for the base coats. Just remember this coat is thinner, so it needs to be applied thinner too.

It’s important that you go as thin as the grain with Microne Medium – which you’ll see is very thin indeed.

Here’s a reminder of the technique:

Using a Microcement Trowel, work your way out from one corner creating a random edge pattern. Keep trowel movements small and random, avoid long sweeping arches – as these will show through to your final finish.

Use the grain in the microcement as your level – if you apply the microcement thicker than the size of the grain, the finish won’t be as strong and will require a lot more sanding. Run the trowel back over each section that you have put down to smooth it out and remove excess product.

Completely cover each surface without stopping. For complete rooms, start with ceilings, then walls from left to right (or right to left) and then the floor.

Run your finger or a corner trowel along internal corners to push the microcement into the corner and then gently trowel away the excess product.

Take care to get full coverage & nice clean corners around shower wastes and other open edges.

Leave to dry. This should take around 3 hours but may vary depending on temperature and humidity.

Mix Microne Plus Fine

Mix the Microne Plus Fine in exactly the same way that you mixed the medium coat.  Add 250g Microne Plus to 5kg Tub  Microne & mix well with a microcement mixer. That’s a mix ratio of 1:20.

Apply Microne Plus Fine

To get the two-tone effect, you want to apply the 2nd lighter coat between 20 minutes – 1 hour after applying the 1st one.  It’s important to get the timings right here to get the best results.

If you apply the 2nd top coat too soon, it will pull off the previous coat.  If you apply it too late, you won’t get as much of a two-tone effect.  So, it’s best to check it 20 minutes after you have applied the 1st top coat & then every 10 minutes after that until it no longer drags.

Mix the 2nd lighter top coat in the same way that you mixed the first one, but this time add around 100ml water to the 10kg tub & mix.

Apply the 2nd coat a lot thinner than you did the 1st coat. If you trowel it too thickly, it will cover the previous coat too much.  So you need to put an area down & then scrape the majority off with your trowel, so that you only have a very thin coat of product in some areas & none at all in others.

Keep the trowel movement random to make sure you get an irregular pattern. Put quite a lot of pressure on the trowel to remove any excess & blend it into the previous section.  This will put more lines in it, so you’ll need to do a final pass with the trowel, more gently, to break up the lines.

Leave to Dry

Once you have completed your final coat, you’ll need to leave it to dry before sanding and applying sealers. This will take at least 12 hours.

Sand with 220/240 Grit Silicone Carbide Sanding Disc

Once the Microcement is fully dry, gently & evenly sand the surface of the microcement with a 220 or 240 grit paper to remove any rough patches and drips. It should be flat from the trowel so you shouldn’t need to sand it too much at this stage.

Vacuum the surface to remove all dust and debris. Do not wet the microcement.

We stock a range of Microcement Sanding Discs on our website.

Check Before Sealing

Make sure you’re happy with the final finish before sealing the microcement. It’s a lot easier to add another coat at this stage, before the sealer has been applied.
